Northern Health and Social Services Board bids farewell

After thirty six years, the Northern Health and Social Services Board held its final meeting on Thursday, 26 March.

Established on 1 October 1973, the Northern Board was set up to “promote the health and well being of the Board’s resident population and to secure a balanced range of health and social care services to the highest standards within available resources to meet the specific needs of the population.”

During this period, the Board has worked tirelessly to inform and involve local people in the planning and development of services to meet the current and future needs of the local population.

Partnership has always been a keen feature and the Board has worked with many statutory, voluntary and community organisations over the years to take forward strategies aimed at addressing health inequities and improving the health and well being of the local population.

A Commemorative Brochure entitled “Looking Back Over the Years” has been produced to mark the work of the Northern Board and to highlight the many advances that have made in the fields of public health, nursing, primary care including GP services, dental and ophthalmology, pharmacy and social care practice.

Speaking at the final meeting, Mr Stuart MacDonnell, Chief Executive, Northern Board, paid tribute to the work of the Board and its many achievements.  He said:

“I would like to record my personal thanks and sincere appreciation for the support of all colleagues – Chairman, Board Members, Senior Management Team Members and all staff of the Northern Board who have shown great commitment and competence in discharging the Board’s responsibilities over many years.

“Our Team has responded tremendously to every challenge and it has been a privilege to work with the community in the pursuit of the goal of improving health and social well being for the people we serve.”

Finally, and on behalf of Board Members, Mr Michael Wood, Chairman, paid tribute to all Northern Board staff for their valued contribution over the years and also looked forward to the future.  He said:

"It has been a tremendous privilege and pleasure to serve as Northern Board Chairman for the best part of nine years.  I wish to acknowledge our gratitude and appreciation to former Board Chairmen and Chief Executives who have led the Board over the past 36 years.

“Whilst leaving behind a legacy of best practice and innovation, the Board looks forward to structures that will ultimately provide for more streamlined and stronger health and social services for everyone."
